“Have you ever wondered why losing weight or maintaining a healthy body weight can be such a challenge? A new study published in the Journal of Clinical 📚 Investigation may hold some answers.
Researchers from UC San Francisco have unveiled the critical role of a protein called KLF15 in regulating fat cells, potentially opening new doors for treating obesity and metabolic diseases.
In a nutshell, the researchers have found a way to switch off this protein within white fat cells. This is the type of fat people carry in abundance, which stores up calories 🍔. By switching off KLF15, the white fat turns to beige fat cells, which burns calories.
“A lot of people thought this wasn’t feasible,” says Brian Feldman 👨🏼⚕, MD, PhD, the Walter L. Miller, MD Distinguished Professor in Pediatric Endocrinology, in a university release. “We showed not only that this approach works to turn these white fat cells into beige ones, but also that the bar to doing so isn’t as high as we’d thought.”

Weight loss v Fat loss
First, we need to distinguish between “weight loss” and “fat loss”, as in the majority of cases we need to lose body fat, not weight.
Secondly, when people say that they want to lose fat, what does that mean exactly? Does that mean you want to lose fat cells? Or do you want your fats cells to be smaller, which are vastly different questions?
Fat Cell 101 👨🏻🔬
If we look at the design of a fat cell, and please bear with me as this is an extremely simplistic explanation. Fat cells have 2 inputs and 1 output, so if you want less fat in the cell then obviously a greater amount of fat has to leave the cell than enters it.
The fat that leaves the cell goes through a process called lipolysis, with the fat entering a cell going through a process called de novo lipogenesis, which is basically turning the carbohydrates that you eat into fat.
We also have a third process to look at which is called re esterification, which turns fatty acids into a triglyceride.
The secret to losing fat is manipulating your hormones in your favour, with probably the most important of these hormones in my opinion will be insulin.
