𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠?
Now we’re sure over Christmas and the New Year
the vast majority of us had a few festive drinks
or two!?
But did those Gin & Tonics , bottles of Champagne
or vast quantities of Mulled wine
dehydrate
you enough to have an effect on your biological age
and your longevity?
The human body is made up from roughly 60% water, so without stating the obvious its fairly important for how well your body functions and your overall health.
The list of health benefits from drinking water are endless really, from carrying nutrients and oxygen around the body to your cells, normalising blood
pressure and digestion to lubricating your joints.
So, does staying hydrated and drinking enough water each day really affect the ageing process?
The short answer is Yes!
We (Muhdo Health) have seen through our own research
over the last 8 years that those who stated ‘No’ to drinking 2 litres of water
per day actually accelerated their epigenetic biological age
by an average of 5.19 years.
Average chronological age: 38.56
Average biological age: 43.75
Differential: acceleration + 5.19 years
While those who stated that they do in fact drink 2 litres + of water per day showed no signs of accelerated ageing.
Average chronological age: 38.34
Average biological age: 38.42
Differential: practically none
What this shows is that drinking water/staying hydrated most likely does not reverse ageing, however failing to stay hydrated almost certainly accelerates ageing.
Hydration levels influence DNA methylation
(DNAm), an epigenetic process critical for gene expression and cellular differentiation.
Being well hydrated ensures the optimal enzymatic activity of DNA methyltransferases, which add methyl groups to your DNA,
influencing genetic activity and stability (which is quite important)
Chronic dehydration or water imbalance can dramatically affect and disrupt this methylation process.
This can potentially lead to your genes not being stimulated and functioning correctly with improper gene silencing and/or activation, which we have now seen in our own data
is associated with ageing
and could potentially lead to a whole variety of diseases such as Cancer.
So, if you only do one thing this year, it would be wise to buy a water bottle and stay hydrated throughout the day.
Trust us, your Genes will thank you!!
